Reflections on the AssetMark 2025 Gold Forum: Learning, Connection, and Inspiration

March 04, 2025

Last week I traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to attend the AssetMark 2025 Gold Forum. Throughout my career, I’ve attended many industry conferences, but this one has always stood out. It’s something I look forward to every year- not just for the insights gained, but for the relationships and the inspiration that comes from being surrounded by great people and great ideas.

Over 1,500 attendees, including around 700 advisors from across the country, came together for this two-and-a-half-day symposium. It was an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day grind and immerse ourselves in learning, networking, and recharging for the work ahead. I always walk away with something valuable, and this year was no exception.

Why Do I Attend?

There are three main reasons I attend conferences like the Gold Forum:

  1. The People – Relationships are everything. The chance to connect in person with industry peers, mentors, and friends is invaluable. Sure, we send emails and have occasional phone calls, but nothing replaces face-to-face conversations. There’s a depth to personal interactions that technology just can’t replicate.
  2. The Knowledge – The industry is constantly evolving, and staying informed is critical. Whether it’s new investment strategies, economic insights, or updates on technology, the Gold Forum provided plenty of opportunities to learn from some of the best minds in the business.
  3. The Inspiration – This is a big one for me. Inspiration is what fuels growth, and this year’s speakers delivered in a big way. Some of their messages will stick with me for a long time. One of the key themes was the idea of doing the impossible. It’s easy to dismiss things as out of reach, but history proves otherwise. What seemed impossible 50 years ago is commonplace today. The takeaway? Set a goal, take the first step, commit, and move forward.

My Takeaways

One of the most impactful talks centered around unreasonable hospitality- the idea of building a culture where exceptional service isn’t just an expectation but a defining characteristic. The speaker, who literally wrote the book on it, shared incredible stories of how small, thoughtful gestures can create unforgettable experiences. It reinforced something we already know but can always do better: balancing technical excellence with a world-class client experience.

Another recurring theme was the necessity of embracing change. Change is constant, and in our industry, it feels like it’s coming faster than ever. Rather than resist it, we have to lean in, adapt, and refine our processes to better serve our clients.

Finally, choosing the right partners is crucial. AssetMark plays a big role in our investment platform, but we work with many different investment and insurance companies. Picking the right partners- whether in business, in leadership, or in life- can make all the difference in the success of any endeavor.

Moving Forward

I came back from the conference feeling energized, not just about where our industry is headed, but about the work we do every day. The challenge with any conference is turning inspiration into action. It’s easy to get fired up in the moment and then fall back into old routines once the event is over. My goal is to take what I’ve learned and implement it in meaningful ways.

At the end of the day, our job is more than just financial planning. It’s about connection, oversight, and providing a framework of ethics and trust. It’s about how we make people feel. And if there’s one thing this conference reminded me, it’s that those principles will never change.

Here’s to growth, learning, and making an impact- both now and in the future.
