The river is never the same, and neither are we.
It’s a simple idea, but one that carries immense weight. Change is constant, whether we like it or not. We evolve, the world moves forward, and the circumstances we step into today aren’t the same as yesterday. I was at a conference recently when a speaker reminded me of this truth with a phrase that stuck with me: A man never steps in the same river twice. It’s an old saying from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, and the more I thought about it, the more it resonated. The essence of this phrase is twofold. First, the river itself is never the same. Water constantly moves, reshaping the landscape, shifting rocks and sand, changing its depth, temperature, and flow. Even if it looks familiar, it is not exactly as it was before. Second, the man stepping into it is also not the same. With every moment that passes, we gain new experiences, perspectives, and knowledge. The person we are today is not the person we were yesterday, and certainly not the person we were years ago.
This idea resonates deeply with me, especially as I look at the last two decades of my career. In many ways, nothing has changed – our mission has always been the same. We meet people where they are, build relationships, and do our best to help. That core focus remains. But how we do it? That’s changed completely. The way we connect with clients today is not the way we connected with them 20 years ago. The tools, the products, the strategies, even the conversations have evolved. When I first started, financial planning looked a lot different – fewer digital tools, fewer options, different ways of structuring plans. The fundamentals of sound financial advice have stayed the same, but the way we deliver that advice has had to adapt. And that’s not just about keeping up with trends – it’s about staying relevant, staying effective, and continuing to meet people where they are. This applies far beyond business. In our personal lives, in our relationships, in the way we see the world – everything changes. The way I think today isn’t the same as it was ten years ago, and that’s a good thing. Life experiences shape us, challenge us, refine us. The struggles, the wins, the losses – they all contribute to the version of ourselves that steps into the river next time.
Yet, despite all the change, we often trick ourselves into believing that things remain the same. We assume that what worked before will work again. We expect things to stay predictable, but the river is always moving, the circumstances are always shifting. If we aren’t aware of that – if we resist it instead of adapting to it – we get stuck. So, what do we do with that? I think the answer is simple: we embrace it. We recognize that growth means change, that progress means adaptation. We accept that the way we do things today might not be the way we do them five years from now, and that’s okay. What matters is that we keep stepping forward, keep learning, and keep evolving.
A man never steps in the same river twice, because he is not the same man, and it is not the same river.
